From Local Roots to Field Skills: Meet Summer Student Celina

Celina’s connection to northeast B.C. and interest in the environment are shaping her studies and summer role with the BC Energy Regulator (BCER). Originally from Fort St. John, she is studying Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria and exploring how her education can support practical solutions for climate change.

Connecting studies to environmental goals

Celina chose Earth and Ocean Sciences because she cares about the planet and wants to better understand climate change. Her position with the BCER is helping her explore where that interest could take her, while giving her direct experience in environmental work close to home.

Getting to know reclaimed sites

This summer, Celina is supporting the Orphans & Restoration Team by completing vegetation inspections at well sites that have been reclaimed, seeded and replanted with trees. The work is introducing her to native plant species in the region and helping her understand how revegetation is assessed over time.

By the end of the summer, one of her goals is to identify plants more confidently in the field. The role is also giving her a clearer view of the planning, care and follow-up involved in returning a well site to a natural state.

Growing confidence on the job

Since joining the BCER, Celina says each day has brought something new to learn. Working with colleagues and taking part in field-based tasks are helping her build practical skills and continue exploring the type of environmental career she hopes to pursue.

Outside work and school

Outside of work and school, Celina has an adventurous item on her bucket list: bungee jumping somewhere tropical and beautiful.

About the BCER summer student program

Each summer, the BCER welcomes students into teams across the organization to gain practical experience, build professional connections and contribute to meaningful work in responsible energy regulation. Through hands-on projects, mentorship and learning opportunities, students apply their studies in a real-world setting while bringing fresh perspectives and curiosity to BCER teams.
