DATE ISSUED: Dec. 16, 2025
EFFECTIVE DATE: Immediately
As part of the BC Energy Regulator’s (BCER) expanded mandate to support renewable energy activities, the BCER is implementing several updates to the Application Management System (AMS) to streamline and facilitate application submissions for renewable energy projects. AMS is the online system for the submission of energy applications in British Columbia.
These updates offer greater clarity for renewable energy operators and are part of the BCER’s goal of improving processes and user experience.
These updates will be deployed the evening of Dec. 16, 2025, and will include the following:
Changes to all ERAA applications
- The addition of a new question for energy sector and drop-down list will display on the Overview page in all Energy Resource Activities Act (ERAA) applications. All applicants are required to select the energy sector from the drop-down list that relates to their application.
Changes to Renewable Energy applications
- Wind Facility has been added to the list of application activity types available when creating a New ERAA application. In conjunction, a new spatial template has been introduced for Renewable Facility installation point features (*_fin.*). Proponents are required to utilize the new spatial template for facility installations when creating the spatial data package for a Wind Facility application. All spatial templates for the AMS including this one, can be found within the AMS and in the Spatial section of the Application Management System webpage (AMS webpage) on the BCER website.
- The Renewable Energy application activity type has been removed from the list of activity types available when creating a New ERAA application. Proponents will no longer utilize this application type when applying for associated activities (investigative use) related to renewable energy (solar and wind). Proponents who wish to apply for associated activities related to wind or solar will now choose "associated activity" from the list of New ERAA application activity types and select either "wind" or "solar" from the energy sector options within the application.
Further details are provided in the latest AMS Release Guide (December 2025) available on the AMS webpage. An updated version of the AMS Spatial Data Submission Standards Manual and related guidance will also be published on the webpage in the coming month.
