Multiple field studies are being initiated to better understand the sources of methane emissions in B.C.'s energy sector. This work requires collaboration and input from operators to allow site-access to ground crews starting in mid-July until mid-October.

EFFECTIVE DATE: Immediately

The BC Energy Regulator, in collaboration with the B.C. government and United Nations Environment Programme International Methane Emissions Observatory, has initiated multiple field studies to better understand the sources of methane emissions from the province’s energy sector.

As a key component of this commitment to monitor and reduce methane emissions, B.C. with the Energy & Emissions Research Lab (EERL) at Carleton University, is pioneering the development and application of measurement-based methane inventories to improve emissions accounting, identify mitigation opportunities and track reductions. Comprehensive, on-site methane surveys are planned at chosen wells and facilities in B.C. for 2023.

The collected data will be crucial to complement emissions analysis from aerial surveys, to update count and emission rate data for pneumatic instruments and pumps, to collect data on current equipment types and control technologies and to attempt ground-based measurements of methane slip from combustors.

All data collected from this project will be anonymized to maintain confidentiality. The collected survey data will be made available to permit holders on request and can be used to satisfy survey requirements under the Drilling and Production Regulation.

This work will require the collaboration and input from oil and gas operators to allow site access to ground crews, which is expected to begin in mid-July and be completed by mid-October 2023. The ground-based measurements will be led by Greenpath Energy Ltd. under the direction of EERL.
