Permit holders must now submit extension requests through the Application Management System (AMS); email submissions are no longer accepted

DATE ISSUED: May 23, 2025
EFFECTIVE DATE: June 5, 2025

Effective June 5, 2025, the BC Energy Regulator (BCER) is updating the Application Management System (AMS) to include a new application type for permit extension requests.

A new “Extension” application type will be available on the Create Application page in the AMS. Permit holders will now be required to submit extension requests through the AMS to extend the expiry date of a permit. The BCER will no longer accept extension applications via email.

Permit holders may use the new Extension application to request a permit extension of up to one year, provided that:

  • The application is submitted at least three months before the permit expiry date, and
  • Construction has not begun on the permitted activity.

Extension applications apply to all permits and related authorizations issued by the BCER except:

  • Stand-alone Changes In and About a Stream approvals, and
  • Short Term Water Use approvals under section 10 of the Water Sustainability Act, which cannot be extended beyond 24 months.

Further guidance on submitting extension applications can be found in the AMS Release Guide June 2025 available on the BCER website. The Oil and Gas Activity Application Manual will also be updated to reflect these changes in the June monthly documentation updates.
